"I expect you will be interested to hear what it will feel like to ¨disappear¨; well ,all I can say is that I don't know myself yet. I don't think I shall ever feel really at home in this house, but that does not mean that I loathe it here ,it is more like being on vacation in a very peculiar boardinghouse. Rather a mad idea , perhaps, but that is how it strikes me". -Anne, pg 20, The Diary Of A Young Girl
I think what Anne meant was that she didn't want to go into hiding because she wouldn't have time to gather all her belongings on time and plus, she was going to leave some of her things behind because in the Holocaust when the Nazi police went into peoples houses they asked them to gather all their things that they can possibly bring with them. Some of them didn't want to go, but they had to because it was a choiceless choice for them to make because they had to go into one of the camps, even the rich people had to go because they thought that because they had a lot of money that they will bribe the Nazi police from getting what all the rest of the people were getting, tortured. They might have wanted to convince them to stay in their home but they still had to go to a camp. That is what Anne Frank was trying to say.
This reminds me when the time I had to move from my house when I was in 6th grade. I didn't want to move from my house because I loved living there, my family and I have lived in that house for 8 years even though how much I didn't want to pack and switch to another house I still had to move to my new house. I personally also felt like the people back then that lived during the Holocaust because they were comfortable in their homes and when the Nazi came to their door and told them that they had to move from their house they might of didn’t want to move because they loved living in their house that is how I can relate to how Anne and all those other people that lived during the Holocaust.
Change is hard for most people. When you don't have any choice about it or being forced to do it can be even harder on a person. I hope you are adjusting better to your move. Even Miss Tesmer hated leaving her first home when she was younger than you.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that change can be different for some people and that it can be hard for people to give up something they like and especially for the people that lived during the Holocaust giving up their homes and business .And yes I have adjusted to my new home but i still kinda miss my old house and it looks like me and Miss Tesmer have some things in common.
DeleteI agree with you that Anne did seem like she didn't like the fact that she needed to not only leave her home, but also leave her precious belongings behind. The situation she was in, the entire Holocaust, could also explain how she didn't really feel at home too. I think any normal person wouldn't feel safe anywhere during this time period, especially hiding in their new 'home.' If you don't feel safe in the house that you're staying in, how can you call it a home? Nonetheless though, her not having her things from her old house also contributed to her feeling of not really having a home. If she had somethings she it would have been at least a bit easier for her to try to make it feel 'homey.'

ReplyDeleteI always found this particular quote interesting because even though Anne is in hiding and cannot let anyone know she is there (as this quote talks about what it would feel like to disappear), she isn't disappearing but is instead attempting to find a way to have daily routines and live (albeit not her home)within the confines of the hand she is being dealt. As you noted, she struggles with that change and talks to her diary about her feelings. Do you think writing her feelings down helped Anne to better cope with the situation? Do you think it helped her deal with the move instead of merely disappearing/letting the bad situation get the best of her?
ReplyDeleteI agree that Anne Frank did not like that she had to pack her things and go and worst of all that she could not of taken all of her things, its just sad and how she did not want to leave. She wanted everything to be normal. The Holocaust was a dark time for the Jewish people living around where the Nazi's have come for them. If she hadn't went into hiding the Nazi's would of come for them first, because the Nazi mostly kept the men alive so the can do labor around the camps and such. It wasn't that she didn't want to go into hiding. It was that she needed to, or else she would of died so early in her life.
ReplyDeleteI think Anne might be trying to say she misses her home and the way things used to be. Her belongings are probably included but I think she's mainly trying to express how she wants everything to go back to normal instead of her and her family having to hide in a home all day. Also, the fact that she spends all day, everyday in the home. I can imagine how she might become restless and want to leave because that home seems like a prison itself.
ReplyDeleteI believe your thought was right, I agree with you! And the things that you thought Anne was saying.
